We were fortunate to stay in the Hilton Hemingways Nairobi SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the world) property. There were lots of Vervet monkeys on the property and we were advised to keep our door to our room closed so that they wouldn’t come in and steal our fruit basket. We could hear some Tree Hyraxes screaming but we didn’t see any here (we did see them at the Karen Blixen museum). We were given an executive suite which would have cost $1,176 per night if we had paid cash (we used Hilton Free Night Certificates for three nights).

One of the problems we have been facing is where to store our duffle with our mountain climbing gear. We don’t want to haul this all around Africa with us (and it would be a checked bag), but we won’t be back to Nairobi until January (when we will need it for our climb of Mt. Kenya). Fortunately, the Hemingways stated that it would be no problem to store it for ten weeks. They said that they store suitcases long term for customers all the time and that they have one customer for whom they’ve been storing a suitcase since 2023!

While we were at this hotel, we went to the Karen Blixen museum (no relation to Santa’s reindeer). This is the person whom the movie Out of Africa was based on. It was fascinating to walk through the same house that she lived in and that was used for the movie set before being turned into a museum. The best part, though, was seeing a family of Tree Hyraxes.
