Dollal in the Danakil Depression, Ethiopia. Way off the beaten path and you’re not getting here without being on a tour. Crappy food for three days, no bathrooms for three days (if you can squat without anything to rest your butt on and poop while being half obscured by a small bush with one hundred people 40 feet away, more power to you).
But, man was it worth it. We saw:
Bright neon yellow-green sulfur pools; Boiling acidic springs; mounds of white sodium chloride; and reddish pools created by sulfur, iron, and salt interacting with super-hot acidic water.
It really looked like something from a completely different planet. I kept walking around like Spock saying, “fascinating.”
For me, it completely blew away all the animals we had seen on safaris and was easily the best thing I have seen in Africa thus far.
