We were in a fabulous Marriott Autograph property on Zanzibar. It’s not a high rise, but several separate two story buildings and villas. Thick smoke started billowing out of one section of the property. And about 20 employees were running around and pulling out fire hoses. It turned out that the kitchen had caught fire. Not a little stove fire but apparently a good portion of the kitchen. Of course that was the day that I was planning on ordering pizza. But most of the kitchen was kaput after that.

The hotel, Le Mersenne, had initially upgraded us to an ocean view room. But there was a problem with our A/C unit and it was getting everything in the room wet. The floors were slippery. I asked them to give us a different room and they initially responded by sending someone to dry the floors and to “change the thermastat from wet the room to keep the room dry?” Well, the room stayed dry for about two hours before getting wet again. I asked to speak to the manager. The hotel clerk asked what the problem was and I again explained about the wet room. This time she responded and she put us in a 1,300 sq ft villa with private pool!
